Leadership

Enkindle Camp (Leadership Camp) | 2017 & 2018 | Holy Innocents' High School

What I did:

During the school holidays in November, I volunteered to attend my school's leadership training camp as a participant. I had to go through an interview to become a camp leader. After that, I was required to form groups and was placed with people I didn't know. The camp consists of a number of station games played both during the day and at night. On the last day of camp, we had to complete safety orientations and take a final exam.

What I have learnt:

With this three-day camp, I have learned to step beyond of my comfort zone to engage others in discussion to get to know them better and to collaborate with teammates I had never met before. Also, I have learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and the significance of respecting the ideas and perspectives of others.

Camp Nexus (Orientation Group Leader) | 2018 | Holy Innocents' High School

What I did:

Together with three other OGLs, I supervised a class of 40 secondary 1 pupils and oversaw their safety over a 3-day, 2-night overnight camp at the school. Although they are playing different station games and participating in an amazing race around and outside of school, we have to supervise the campers and foster class bonding throughout the days. In addition, I had to help with the campfire setup and the performances on the last night.

What I have learnt:

I've gained knowledge on how to manage a class of 40 pupils, provide first aid, and effectively communicate with campers who did not want to listen and knowing how to adapt to changes at the last minute

Camp Skein (Adventure Camp Leader) | 2019 | Holy Innocents' High School

What I did:

Along with four other ACLs, I guided a group of 40 Secondary 3 students over the course of a 3-day, 2-night camp in an unfamiliar camp site, while simultaneously ensuring their safety and fostering a sense of community among the campers. Then, I helped ensure the campers' security and whereabouts. I also assisted them with the planning and setup of the campfire performances. And last but not least, I led the campers to have a great and interesting time.

What I have learnt:

I've gained a lot of experience instructing a class of 40 secondary 3 students and dealing with disruptive students that won't follow directions. Also, I have utilized the compass to communicate with others and employ quick thinking when modifications had to be made at the last minute in order to find my way through new terrain.

Camp Enkindle (Station Master) | 2019 | Holy Innocents' High School

What I did:

After graduation, I have returned to my secondary school as I wanted to help out with the Enkindle Camp for the next batch of camp leaders, I volunteered myself to be a station master to helped out with stations games in school. I had to relay the instructions to the participants and facilitate and supervised their safety and whereabout when they are in the game throughout the game process. Next, I had to learn a campfire dance as well as for the SM performance.

What I have learnt:

To always maintain composure and patience, even when things are tense. The next step is to convey accurate information to others and emphasize the need of having strong interpersonal skills in order to minimize the likelihood of miscommunication
